Fun Stuff Check out this cool Ally Blue Comic!
Quote of the Month: “Sometimes, I guess there just aren’t enough rocks.”
Download of the Month: "Who Will Sing Me Lullabies" by Irish singer Kate Rusby. A simple tune with Kate's crystal clear vocals crooning sweet, sad lyrics over it. Heartbreakingly lovely.
Hottie of the Month: Random cute guy with AWESOME tattoo. Take a close look, y'all, he has an octopus on his arm there. Anyone who knows me knows about my weird thing for cephalopods *g*
* * * * * A video from Patrick Wolf's show at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC in June 2009, taken by a friend of mine. This is Patrick Wolf performing "Who Will" from The Bachelor. Squee! And here's one of Patrick at that same show, helping the French band Plasticines perform their AWESOME song Bitch.
Music Recs Radiohead. Best band in the history of the world. Seriously. For anyone who thinks of them as "that 'Creep' band," think again. Check them out! Too many favorite songs to count, but here's a few: I Might Be Wrong, There There, Talk Show Host, Street Spirit, Fake Plastic Trees, Paranoid Android, Dollars and Cents, Videotape, House Of Cards (which will always conjure images of Bonnaroo for me... sigh). Patrick Wolf. My latest obsession. Patrick has been playing professionally since age 11 (he's 23 now). He plays violin, viola, ukulele, piano, harp, harpsichord, accordian, and Theramin, and most likely other instruments of which I am unaware. He dresses like a feral schoolboy and has a voice that can twist like a snake, dip into the depths and soar into the stratosphere. And his music is like nothing else I've ever heard. Some pics from various places! Loads of favorite songs, but here's a few VERY favorites: The Libertine, Augustine, Childcatcher, Godrevy Point, Penzance. Larrikin Love, a London band with a completely unique sound blending punk, ska, bluegrass and other influences. Upbeat, foot-tapping tunes coupled with often very dark lyrics make for a fascinating listen. Plus you just gotta love a punk-type band with banjoes :D Check out their MySpace page for some sample songs. Be sure to listen to Six Queens, Edwould and Happy As Annie. Too bad they broke up. Sigur Rós. Now, I know all you people who have been fans of theirs for years are gonna laugh at me, but I just discovered them. And I'm already hooked. Their music is a little sad, a lot gorgeous, with a sweeping, majestic sound. I can't even describe it. Just go to their website and listen, you'll be glad you did! Placebo. These guys have never, IMHO, gotten the credit they deserve for their music, mostly because the press always liked to focus on singer/guitarist Brian Molko's open bisexuality and penchant for wearing dresses and make-up. They've made some unusual and amazing music, and deserve a listen. They're also in the studio, recording their fifth album. Oh yeah, Brian Molko is seriously the hottest thing to ever walk this earth. Favorite songs: I Do, Blackeyed, Special Needs, Nancy Boy, Space Monkey, Infra-Red, Pierrot the Clown. Beck. Odd little California-boy genius, with the bluest eyes you've ever seen. Every album is different, and brilliant in its own way. So much fun live. Favorite songs: Beercan, Hell Yes, Nobody's Fault But My Own. Feeding The Fire. Another Chapel Hill band. Saw them exactly once, and they blew me right the fuck away. The Libertines. What an incredible band. They sound like the unholy love-child of The Beatles and The Sex Pistols, and look like the pretty boys you were dying to screw under the bleachers in high school. And they are no more, alas. Go buy their first album, Up The Bracket, anyhow. Other great bands and singers: The White Stripes, Bloc Party, The Arcade Fire (you HAVE to see these guys live), Gomez, They Might Be Giants, Le Tigre, Muse, P.J. Harvey, Rufus Wainwright, Be Your Own Pet, TV On The Radio, Tokyo Police Club, Martha Wainwright, Matt Alber, Regina Spektor. |
